Neurodivergent-Informed Therapy in Birmingham, Alabama
You Tried Therapy Before, and It Felt Like the Therapist Really Didn't Get You.
Maybe the advice never quite fit. Build the routine, push through the discomfort, just try harder, think more positively — strategies built for a brain that works differently than yours, handed to you as though the problem was that you weren't doing them right. So you added "failing at therapy" to the long list of things you were quietly failing at. The truth is simpler and kinder: the approach wasn't built for how your mind actually works.
At Empower Counseling, we offer neurodivergent-informed therapy in Birmingham, Alabama — for ADHD, autistic, and AuDHD adults, and for the women who spent years sensing they were wired differently before they had a name for it. This is therapy that starts from a different premise: your brain isn't a problem to be corrected. It's the brain we build the work around.

You May Recognize Yourself Here
So much of conventional mental health care quietly assumes a neurotypical brain — and when it doesn't fit, the mismatch gets filed as your failure. You might recognize:
- Therapy that felt like being handed neurotypical advice and blamed when it didn't work
- The exhaustion of masking — performing in the way others see as "normal" so consistently that you've lost track of who you are underneath it
- Being praised for how well you cope, while no one sees what the coping actually costs you
- Sensory overwhelm, shutdowns, or meltdowns that you've learned to hide and then judge yourself for
- A lifetime of being told you're "too much" or "too sensitive," until you started believing it
- Strategies that work for everyone else falling apart the moment you try to use them
- Only realizing in adulthood that you might be neurodivergent — and grieving the years you spent thinking you were just broken
You don't have to be in crisis to deserve support. If any of this sounds familiar, reaching out is the right thing to do.
"Your brain was never the problem. The problem was being handed tools built for someone else's — and being blamed when they didn't fit."
Our Approach to Neurodivergent-Informed Therapy
For a lot of neurodivergent adults, the hardest part isn't the wiring itself — it's a lifetime of being measured against a standard that was never built for them, and concluding they were the ones who came up short. Neurodivergent-informed therapy starts somewhere else entirely. We don't treat your brain as a malfunction to be corrected into neurotypical shape. We work with how your mind actually operates and build from there.
In practice, that means we adapt the therapy to you, not the other way around. We don't pathologize the traits that make you neurodivergent, we don't ask you to mask in session, and we don't hand you one-size-fits-all advice and call it your fault when it doesn't stick. Drawing on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and other proven methods, the work helps you understand how your particular brain operates, build strategies that genuinely fit it, and untangle your sense of worth from how well you've managed to perform "normal."
The goal isn't to make you less neurodivergent. It's to help you stop fighting your own mind, set down the shame you were never supposed to carry, and build a life that fits the brain you actually have.
What Becomes Possible
The shame loosens.
When your brain is understood instead of corrected, the lifetime of "what's wrong with me" begins to lift, and you stop treating every mismatch as proof of failure.
You can stop masking.
In a space where you don't have to perform "normal," you get to find out who you actually are underneath the years of compensating — and lean into what works best for you. That's when the magic happens.
The strategies finally fit.
Approaches built around how your mind genuinely works start to hold, because they're designed for you rather than against you.
You come home to yourself.
Instead of contorting to meet a standard that was never yours, you build a life and a sense of self that fit the brain you actually have.

Common questions
You don't have to have it figured out to reach out.
Do I need a formal diagnosis to start?
No. You don't need a formal diagnosis, or to be certain you're neurodivergent, to benefit from neurodivergent-informed therapy. Many people arrive self-identified or still wondering, and that's a welcome place to start. If formal assessment is a step you want to take, we can refer you to a trusted provider we work with — and therapy can begin in parallel.
What makes therapy "neurodivergent-informed"?
It means the therapy adapts to your brain rather than expecting your brain to adapt to the therapy. We don't pathologize neurodivergent traits, we don't require you to mask in session, and we don't hand you neurotypical strategies and blame you when they don't fit. The starting assumption is that your mind works differently — not wrongly — and the work is built from there.
Can I do this therapy online?
Yes. We offer online therapy throughout Alabama, with the same depth of work as in-person sessions — and for many neurodivergent clients, meeting from a familiar, sensory-friendly space of their own makes the work easier.
