THERAPIST · DOG PERSON · PROBLEM SOLVER

Kathryn Ely, LPC, JD

You Have Done Everything You Can Think Of. And You Still Feel Like You Are Not Enough.

Kathryn Has Been There. She Knows the Way Out.

Kathryn Ely is a Licensed Professional Counselor, founder of Empower Counseling, and a former practicing attorney who spent years inside the exact struggle she now helps women leave behind — the relentless feeling that no matter how much you accomplish, it is never quite enough.

She doesn’t just understand this clinically. She lived it, and found the way through. Her approach is grounded in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) — an advanced, evidence-based method that doesn’t just quiet anxiety and self-criticism but builds something better in its place: a clear sense of who you are, what matters, and how to move toward it with intention rather than fear.

If You Have Found Your Way Here,

You Might Recognize Yourself in Some of These.

You are doing everything — and still feel like you’re failing at all of it. You hold the household together and show up for everyone, and still the voice says it isn’t enough. “I’m exhausted in a way I can’t explain.” “Everyone depends on me. No one asks how I’m doing.” That voice is not the truth. It is a pattern, and it can change.

Maybe you are succeeding by every measure and still feel like a fraud — sure people will eventually see through you. Imposter syndrome is the shadow side of ambition, and it shows up most reliably in the highest achievers. Kathryn has mapped this territory from the inside.

Maybe you are at the start of something scarier than you expected — you worked hard to arrive, and now you’re not sure what you want. Kathryn helps women find clarity not by eliminating the fear, but by finding something more compelling to move toward.

Maybe your brain hasn’t been quiet in years — the perfectionism, the hyperproductivity, the schedule with no room for you. You don’t have to wait until it gets worse to deserve help.

Whatever brought you here — you do not have to have it figured out. You just have to show up.

What It Feels Like to Sit Across From Kathryn

Sessions with Kathryn are direct and purposeful, but never rushed. She is a problem-solver by training and a therapist by vocation, which makes her exceptionally good at helping you see your own patterns clearly, name what is happening underneath, and find a concrete direction forward. She helps you actually move somewhere — not just process in place.

She is also genuinely curious about who you are and what you want, with a way of asking the one question that opens everything up. Women who work with Kathryn often describe feeling seen in a way they haven’t before — not just heard, but understood. And then, practically and steadily, helped.

What Happens when you reach out

Your first session begins with one question Kathryn genuinely wants the answer to: what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life? Not the version you think you should want — the real answer, even if you don’t know it yet.

From there, the work is collaborative, values-driven, and practical. Kathryn helps you clarify what actually matters to you, identify the patterns standing between you and it, and move toward the life you want with intention instead of anxiety. Most clients find it fundamentally different from other therapy they’ve tried — less about processing the past, more about building something better.

What Kathryn Believes about you

She believes the voice that says you are not enough is not the truth about who you are. It is a story — one that made sense once, got reinforced until it felt like fact, and can be rewritten. She believes the anxiety and perfectionism driving you are not character flaws but habits: loud, exhausting, deeply familiar habits. And habits can change.

She also believes you already have what it takes — not after you fix the anxiety or feel more ready, but right now, exactly as you are. Her job is to help you see that clearly enough to act on it.

You Deserve Support. Kathryn Is Here.

The busyness, the self-doubt, the exhaustion of holding everything together while the voice keeps moving the finish line — there is another way to live. Kathryn has been there, and built her entire practice on finding it. You reached out. That matters.

How Kathryn Helps

The approach: Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Kathryn's approach is grounded in Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) — an advanced, evidence-based method that she has been using for over a decade, including on herself.

ACT is different from most therapy you may have tried before. Rather than spending months analyzing the past or trying to think your way out of anxiety, ACT works in three interconnected ways: it helps you change your relationship with the thoughts that have been controlling your decisions; it brings clarity to what actually matters to you, beneath the noise of expectation and achievement; and it helps you take intentional action toward that life, even when the fear and self-doubt are still present.

For high-achieving women — professionals, attorneys, moms, college students under pressure — this approach is especially powerful because it meets you at the level where the problem actually lives. Not in your lack of effort or your lack of capability. In the story your mind has been running about what those things mean.

Kathryn is advanced trained in ACT — one of a small number of therapists in Alabama with this level of training. She has used it with hundreds of clients, has written and spoken publicly about it, and used it to change her own life before anyone else's.

Background & Training

Kathryn Ely holds a Juris Doctor (JD) from the University of Alabama School of Law and a Master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Alabama, and is advanced trained in Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT).

Before becoming a therapist, Kathryn was a practicing attorney — first as an Assistant District Attorney, then in private practice. She knows the professional world her clients come from, not just clinically but personally. That background gives her a rare ability to understand the specific pressures facing attorneys, high-achieving professionals, and women who have built successful lives and still feel like something essential is missing.

She founded Empower Counseling in Birmingham with a single conviction: that the right therapy, delivered well, does not just reduce suffering — it builds a life worth living. That conviction shapes every session.

She offers in-person sessions at Empower Counseling's Birmingham office and online therapy throughout Alabama. She is accepting new clients now.

A Little More About Kathryn

Kathryn Ely went back to school in her mid-40s — scared, uncertain, and already convinced she might be too late. She took it one step at a time. The night of her first class, she was hooked.

She is a former attorney, a mother of three, a dog person, and someone who has always been more comfortable asking questions than sitting with unanswered ones. She is an explorer in the literal sense — she believes there is always more to understand, more to discover, more to reach toward. That quality shows up in how she practices therapy.

Her favorite question — borrowed from the poet Mary Oliver — is the one she asks every client she meets: "Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?" She genuinely wants to know the answer. And she genuinely wants to help you get there.
