Counseling for College Students in Alabama
College can be so difficult.
Everything is changing so fast — your views about others, the world, and yourself. You do not know who you are anymore or what you believe. You do not know what you want your future to look like. The highs are higher and the lows are lower. It is hard to know where to turn for help, especially when it looks like everyone else has it together.
We understand what a difficult transition going to college can be. Previously, decisions were made for you and your path was determined by others — until now. All of a sudden it is your turn to choose your path, make important decisions at every turn, and figure out who you actually are. That can be scary. Everyone feels lost at times during college. But if you are struggling to find your way, counseling for college students can help.
Whether you are at the University of Alabama, Auburn University, Samford University, or anywhere else in Alabama, we can help you thrive. Sessions are available in person at our Mountain Brook office in Birmingham and online throughout Alabama and Tennessee.

You are tired of...
You do not have to keep carrying this alone. If any of this sounds familiar, reaching out is the right thing to do.
- Being overwhelmed
- Questioning who you are or who you want to be
- Not knowing what you want to study or what you want to do after college
- Being disorganized and not managing your time well
- Knowing you can do better but not knowing exactly how
- Not setting and reaching goals
- Lacking healthy habits
- Anxiety that makes everything feel harder than it should
- Depression or a flatness that has replaced the energy you used to have
And especially…
- Not feeling good about yourself

Counseling for College Students Can Help
We have helped many college students go from feeling stuck to genuinely moving forward. Here is what that change tends to look like:
- From overwhelmed to calm, deliberate, and organized
- From unclear about the future to having a real plan — for college and beyond
- From confusion about who you are to knowing exactly who you are and what is important to you
- From poor time management to knowing how to prioritize and handle all your responsibilities
- From feeling lost to having a strong sense of purpose and direction
- From wasting time to being intentional, setting goals, and actually reaching them
- From lacking confidence and self-worth to being genuinely confident in who you are
As counselors, we get it.
We understand how difficult it is to be on your own, trying to find your way. We will help you become clear about who you are, who you want to be, and what you want your life to look like. Then we will help you build an action plan to get there.
Our Approach to Counseling for College Students
Acceptance Commitment Therapy Helps You Get Clear on Who You Are and Where You Are Going.
We use Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help you become clear about what is important to you, what has been standing in your way, and the actions it will take to be the person you want to be and have the kind of life you want to have.
We begin with really listening to what you are going through and how it is affecting you. Then we help you uncover what is important to you — what you actually want your life to look like. This might take a little digging, but we will get there. Once we know what matters most to you, we examine your strengths, aptitudes, interests, likes, and desires. We look at the areas of your life you want to strengthen and the relationships you want to improve.
As we go through this process, you will notice your self-confidence rising — because you are becoming clear about who you are, focusing on everything you have to offer, and building a real plan to get there. From there, we can help with whatever is not working: time management, productivity, goal setting, healthy habits, and anything else standing between you and the life you want in college and beyond.
THIS IS WHAT COLLEGE STUDENTS DESCRIBE ON THE
Other Side of Feeling Lost.
The direction becomes clear.
The fog of not knowing who you are or what you want begins to lift — not because someone told you what to do, but because you did the work of understanding what actually matters to you. Decisions about your major, your future, your relationships, and your time start to feel like choices rather than sources of dread.
The overwhelm becomes manageable.
When you have clarity about your values and a real plan for your time, the overwhelm that has been running your life begins to lose its grip. You stop feeling like you are always behind — and start feeling like you are actually building something.
Self-confidence becomes grounded.
Not the kind that depends on grades or other people's approval. The kind that comes from genuinely knowing yourself and building a life that reflects it. This is the self-confidence that carries you through college and every chapter that follows.
Relationships improve.
When you are clearer about who you are and what you need, the relationships around you tend to shift too. The patterns that were not working — the people-pleasing, the boundary struggles, the connections that left you drained — begin to change as you become more grounded in yourself.
Potential Hesitation of Beginning Counseling for College Students
You're thinking, "I should be able to do this on my own."
You can continue to struggle to find your way alone — or you can turn to someone who understands how difficult this season actually is and has a better way through it. Asking for support is not a sign of weakness. It is the same instinct that makes any expertise valuable: you bring in someone who knows the territory and can help you find your footing faster than you would alone.
After looking at your class schedule, you think, "I don't have time for counseling."
What you learn in 50 minutes a week — in person or online — will save you far more time than it costs. How much time are you currently wasting feeling overwhelmed and without direction? Counseling for college students can help you find your path and guide you toward the actions necessary to be organized, to prioritize, and to set and reach your goals.

Common questions
You don't have to have it figured out to reach out.
Is counseling at Empower only for students in Birmingham?
Not at all. We offer online counseling for college students throughout Alabama and Tennessee — the same depth of work as in-person sessions, from wherever you are. Whether you are at the University of Alabama, Auburn University, Samford University, Vanderbilt University, or anywhere else in the state, we can work with you.
What if I do not know what I need or what is wrong?
That is one of the most common places college students start. You do not need to arrive with answers or a clear sense of what you need. The work of figuring that out is often the work itself. You just need to reach out — and we will take it from there.
How is counseling at Empower different from my campus counseling center?
Campus counseling centers provide valuable support — but typically have limited availability and high demand. At Empower, you work with a dedicated therapist using ACT — an evidence-based approach that goes beyond symptom management and helps you build clarity, direction, and genuine self-confidence. Sessions are available on your schedule, in person or online.
Can counseling help even if I am not in crisis?
Yes — and the students who benefit most are often those who are functioning but know something is not working. You do not need a crisis or a diagnosis to deserve support. If college feels harder than you expected and you are not sure which direction to go, that is enough.
You are not alone. Let's begin.
You do not have to keep struggling without a sense of direction.
A free consultation is simply a conversation. You do not need the right words. You just need to reach out — and we will take it from there.
