Young Adult Counseling

Being a Young Adult These Days Is Not Easy.

There are so many decisions to make and so many options. How do you know if you are making the right choices for your future? What do you do when you feel like you are being left behind while everyone else is moving forward with their lives?

You have big decisions to make — about your career, your relationships, your identity, your direction — and the pressure to have it figured out arrives before most people feel remotely ready. Everyone else seems to be moving forward with confidence. Inside, the experience is often something else entirely.

At Empower, we specialize in counseling for young adults in Birmingham, Alabama. We understand how difficult it can be to be out in the world and not know which way to go. And we know how to help you get clear — about who you are, what you want, and what it will actually take to get there. Sessions are available in person at our Mountain Brook office and online throughout Alabama and Tennessee.

You May Recognize Yourself Here

The struggle of young adulthood is real — and it is often invisible from the outside. See if any of these feel familiar.

  • Being overwhelmed by decisions and not knowing which direction to go
  • Feeling like others are moving forward and leaving you behind
  • Not having the relationships you want — or not knowing how to build them
  • Feeling like others take advantage of you, or struggling to set boundaries
  • Low self-confidence or a persistent sense of not being good enough
  • Anxiety that makes decisions feel impossible or the future feel threatening
  • Depression or a flatness that has replaced the energy and direction you used to have
  • Navigating a major life transition — a new job, a move, the end of a relationship, a loss
  • And especially — not being satisfied with who you are

You do not have to keep carrying this alone. If any of this sounds familiar, reaching out is the right thing to do.

Empower Counseling & Coaching Can Help You Find Your Direction.

We have helped many young adults go from feeling stuck to genuinely moving forward. Here is what that change tends to look like:

  • From overwhelmed to in control — with clarity about what actually matters and what to do next
  • From unsatisfying relationships to knowing what you want and how to build it
  • From feeling lost to having clear direction and purpose
  • From lacking confidence to knowing your self-worth — not because someone told you to, but because you understand yourself
  • From feeling left behind to setting goals with a genuine sense of direction
  • And especially — from not being satisfied with yourself, to being confident and liking who you are

Empower Counseling Is Different from Other Counseling.

Acceptance Commitment Therapy Helps You Get Clear on Who You Are and Where You Are Going.

We use Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help you become clear about what is important to you, what has been standing in your way, and the actions it will take to be the person you want to be and have the kind of life you want to have.

We begin with really listening to what you are going through and how it is affecting you. Then we help you uncover what is important to you — what you actually want your life to look like. This might take a little digging, but we will get there. Once we know what matters most to you, we look at your strengths, interests, values, and the areas of your life you want to strengthen. We examine your relationships and whether they are working the way you want them to.

As we go through this process, you will notice your self-confidence rising — because you are becoming clear about who you are, focusing on all you have to offer, and building an actual plan to get there. From there, we help with whatever is not working: time management, goal setting, healthy habits, boundaries, productivity. The practical and the personal, together.

WHAT changes

This Is What Young Adults Describe on the Other Side of Feeling Stuck.

K

The direction becomes clear.

The fog of not knowing which way to go begins to lift. Not because someone told you what to do — but because you did the work of understanding what actually matters to you. From there, the path forward becomes something you can see and move toward with real intention.

K

Self-confidence becomes grounded.

Not the performed kind that collapses under pressure. The kind that comes from genuinely knowing yourself — your values, your strengths, what you want — and building a life that reflects all of it. This is the self-confidence that does not depend on external validation to stay intact.

K

Relationships improve.

When you are clearer about who you are and what you need, the relationships in your life tend to follow. The patterns that were not working — the people-pleasing, the boundary struggles, the connections that left you feeling drained — begin to shift as you become more grounded in yourself.

K

The anxiety and overwhelm ease.

For many young adults, the overwhelm is not just about circumstances — it is about the gap between where you are and where you think you should be. As that gap closes, and as ACT gives you tools for managing the thoughts and feelings that have been running the show, the overwhelm loses its grip.

What Is Holding You Back from Beginning Counseling with Empower to Get on the Path to Your Best, Most Enjoyable Life?

Are you thinking, "I should be able to do this on my own?"

You can continue to struggle to find your way alone — or you can turn to someone who understands how difficult this season actually is and has a better way through it. Asking for support is not a sign of weakness. It is the same instinct that makes any expertise valuable: you bring in someone who knows the territory and can help you find your footing faster than you would alone.

Are you thinking, "I don't have time for counseling?"

What you learn in 50 minutes a week — in person or online — will save you far more time than it costs. How much time are you currently spending feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or without direction? Counseling helps you find your path and take the actions necessary to get organized, set priorities, build the relationships you want, and reach your goals. The investment is small compared to what it returns.

You do not have to continue to struggle without a sense of direction.

Empower Counseling can help you find your way. Our Birmingham area counseling clinic has knowledgeable and caring therapists who specialize in helping young adults discover who they are and what they want. Whether you are navigating anxiety, a difficult transition, relationship struggles, or simply the disorientation of this decade — we have been here before, with people exactly where you are. And we know how to help.

Common questions

You don't have to have it figured out to reach out.

Is what I am going through serious enough to need therapy?

If it is affecting your daily life, your relationships, your sense of direction, or your ability to move forward — it is enough. You do not need a crisis or a diagnosis to deserve support. Many of the young adults who come to Empower are simply in a season that is harder than they expected, carrying more than they have been able to name. That is reason enough.

How is counseling at Empower different from regular talk therapy?

We use ACT — an evidence-based approach that goes beyond talking about your problems. It helps you get clear on your values, change your relationship with the thoughts and feelings that have been holding you back, and take concrete action toward the life you actually want. Many young adults who have not found talk therapy helpful describe ACT as fundamentally different in both approach and results.

Can I do young adult counseling online?

Yes. We offer counseling for young adults online throughout Alabama and Tennessee — the same depth of work as in-person sessions, from wherever you are most comfortable.

What if I do not know what I want or what is wrong — can therapy still help?

Yes — and in fact, this is one of the most common places young adults start. You do not need to arrive with answers or a clear sense of what you need. The work of figuring that out is often the work itself. You just need to reach out, and we will take it from there.

You are not alone. Let's begin.

You do not have to keep struggling without a sense of direction.

A free consultation is simply a conversation. You do not need the right words. You just need to reach out — and we will take it from there.
