Counseling for Auburn University students with Empower Counseling.

It has been another difficult year for students at Auburn University. Some things on campus have been back to normal…like tailgating and watching games at Jordan-Hare. But even Auburn students are still feeling the pressure and uncertainty of living in a world with Covid-19. Counseling for Auburn Univerity students with Empower Counseling can help.

It has been almost two years since Covid-19 concerns shut down our country. It has been 2 very long and stressful years for everyone. But if you are a student who only gets approximately 4 years in college, two years can seem like forever. If you are a freshman or sophomore in college at Auburn University, you have never known a “normal college experience”.

I currently have several Auburn University clients in counseling with Empower Counseling. Some come to in-person counseling and others prefer receiving their counseling online. No matter where we are, online or in-person, I am hearing clients report that uncertainty of what will happen next in the world is contributing to, or causing, their high anxiety levels. Whether she is the freshman or sophomore who wonders if she will ever have that “normal” or expected college experience or he is the junior or senior wondering if he will find a job, it is clear students are feeling the pressure. We often create timelines for when we think we should accomplish certain goals or milestones. When you put yourself on a deadline, which is easy for a college student to do because the college experience is time limited, the pressure increases and it is difficult to focus on the task at hand-learning and growing. When, as a college student, you are worried about what is going to happen next, and if the pandemic is going to rob you of all of your college years, it is difficult to focus on your studies. It is difficult to remain in the present moment and enjoy yourself.

First of all, let me say this ia all completely normal. The problem is that college students tend to think they are alone in their anxieties and insecurities, which makes them feel isolated. If college students do isolate, pull away from others and spend more and more time alone, anxiety can quickly be compounded by depression.

Our female and male counselors are trained in Acceptance Commitment Therapy. Acceptance Commitment Therapy or ACT is more than just talking and venting to someone who will listen so you can feel better temporarily. Our compassionate counselors will listen to what is troubling you but it is not simply for a temporary fix. Our counselors listen with an ear to help equip you with the tools to solve problems, make lasting change, and function better in your life. Acceptance Commitment Therapy is about lasting, positive change.

In my experience, Acceptance Commitment Therapy is especially effective for Auburn University students.

Even without the uncertainty that Covid-19 brings to the table, the college years can be a difficult time of transition.

Before college, we live with family and follow others’ rules about how to live life. Often, we do not have much power or influence over our own lives. We have teachers, parents, clergy, all guiding us and helping us to live by their rules. Even with wonderful family and support systems, going to college can be a struggle, because college is a time to move away from family and what we have been taught to think, into our own thoughts and ideas of what we want our lives to look like. This transition is difficult to navigate and can cause friction in the best of times. During a Covid-19 pandemic it is by far more difficult.
