Counseling for Auburn Students with Empower Counseling: Time Management is key to Strong Mental Health

Efficient time management is key to being your most productive. More importantly, intentional and efficient time management go a long way toward helping you achieve strong mental wellbeing.

If you can mindfully and intentionally use your time and prioritize action toward your values and goals, you will:

-Have higher self-esteem

-Be more confident in your abilities

-Accomplish more

-Recognize that you have time for fun, hobbies, and relaxation

-Achieve a healthier balance between work, leisure and self-care

All of which lead you toward strong mental wellbeing.

Counseling for Auburn students with Empower Counseling can give you the tools for effective and efficient time management.

On the other hand, poor time management can lead to burn-out.

What is Burn-out?  Burn-out is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive, prolonged stress.

How Does it Happen?  Many factors can contribute to burn-out.

You might be thinking to yourself, “I work hard all of the time. I manage my time very well”. I would argue if you are working hard ALL OF THE TIME, then you are on your way to burn out.

I see this happen all of the time with clients who come to Empower Counseling for therapy. They are exhausted, both physically and mentally. They call themselves lazy because they just can’t seem to get their work done like they used to. They have lost all motivation to do all of the things they used to enjoy doing. And they criticize themselves for lacking willpower and losing their strong work ethic.

That is classic burn out my friends. You can be running at all cylinders for weeks or months, laser focused on nothing but work or school. You can be the most productive you haver ever been, working long days into the night. Until suddenly you can’t. And then you don’t understand why.

Setting lofty goals and being productive are important to our self esteem. A sense of accomplishment, can go along way toward making us feel good about who we are at the end of the day. But this is when we get in trouble….when we have the thought “I must be productive all of the time.”

We are human beings, not robots. If we go at a breakneck pace for too long, just focusing on work or school, we are neglecting other important needs we humans have. If those needs go without being met for too long, burn-out, anxiety, and/or depression will occur.

You can set loft goals. You can set the highest goals. But you need to be realistic about what it is going to take to reach these goals, as well as, when and how you are going to pay attention to your needs in all other areas, or domains of your life.

This is why time management is the key to strong mental health.

We have to know what we need, and what is important to us in all areas of life, so that we can be mindful and intentional with our time toward all of these things. If you have loft goals, you can reach them, but you must manage your time extremely well to get there, without burning out.

At Empower Counseling we have methods to help you with time management that have been proven effective, with high school students, college students, and adults. These methods have helped other Auburn students who have come to Empower Counseling for Auburn students.
