Counseling for College Students with Empower Counseling: Make Second Semester Better
Whether you are a freshman at Samford, a sophomore at Birmingham-Southern, a junior at Auburn University, or a senior at the University of Alabama, Empower Counseling can help make your second semester better than your first.
College Can Be Tough to Manage
With all you have to do college can be tough to manage. Whether you are an athlete, in the band, a leader in your sorority or fraternity, have a job while in school, or simply have a difficult class load, time management, healthy habits, and discipline are your keys to success. However, college is a difficult place to establish or keep healthy habits. In fact, a college is a place where it is easier to develop unhealthy habits than healthy ones.
No matter what we, our family, and educators do to help us get ready for college, there will most likely be things you have to learn yourself upon arrival.
MAKE THE SECOND SEMESTER BETTER With counseling for college students
Until you go off to school, most of you have not had to worry about obtaining food for yourselves. You have probably had someone at a home shop, prepare, and cook most of your meals. You simply have to show up when the food is ready. Now that you have been in college, I bet you now appreciate the effort, energy, and time you must spend obtaining food and scheduling meals. Before college, you were able to use that time, energy, and effort toward other aspects of your life. Then there is laundry. You might have been the one to do your own laundry at home but everything you needed was right there. You could put a load of clothes in, leave it, and move on to something else. Now, for most of you, laundry is a whole thing.
Going from having help from others in many aspects of your life to now having to use your own mental energy to think about all of the things can be exhausting and overwhelming.
Our brains tend to tell us that everything we have to do is URGENT. It all needs to be done right now. When we think about everything we have to do at once, and become overwhelmed, it is difficult to get started on getting anything accomplished. Overwhelming feeds procrastination. Procrastination fuels anxiety and depression. At first, you may think that you work better under pressure, doing assignments last minute. But the stress involved in having your “to-do” list always hanging over your head and never catching up, leads to anxiety, burnout, and depression.
